The vineyards of the Languedoc region are the largest in France with the total area of 246,000 hectares of vines representing 29% of French vineyard surface area. There are 36 Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée and 22 Protected Geographical Indications. The grapes used for red wines are mainly Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault while white wines are made from bourboulenc, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Roussanne.
