The producer

Château Lestignac

Château Lestignac is located in the heart of the Périgord region, on the side hills of the Bergeracois area (a winemaking region somewhat under-represented). The 8-hectare estate has been managed by Camille and Mathias Marquet since 2008. The couple took over Mathias’s grand parents’ vineyard, and shifted straight away to biological farming, before going even further with biodynamic farming. The vegetal resources, aged about fourty years old, are planted on various soils: a clay-limestone plateau and several calcareous-flintstone slopes. The soils’ microbial life is rich and diversified, allowing the plants to grow sane and deficiency-free fruits. Local grape varieties such as sauvignon, semillon and muscadelle for the whites, merlot, cabernet-sauvignon and cabernet-franc for the reds are favoured. A drastic sorting is done directly in the vines during harvest, and if fruit ripeness allows it, winemaking is carried out without added sulphites. The wines are made with as little intervention as possible. The grapes are fermented using indigenous yeasts, and are put to macerate without any punch-down or pump-over. On the other hand, contact with lees is always sought-after to nourish and protect the wines. Among the different cuvées of Château Lestignac, we certainly enjoyed « Les Enfants qui s’aiment s’embrassent debout »: a happy marriage of merlot and semillon, that have undergone a ten-day whole-bunch maceration. What a lively juice!
