Domaine d'Auvenay

Some Domaines can be dubbed as legends. Legends that, even the most sceptical, would not contest. We all have succumbed to one of these iconic wine labels that propelled us to the wine world, and more specifically to Burgundy. Let’s dive in the mythical land of the Côte d’Or. Lalou Bize-Leroy, then aged 23, joins her dad Henri Leroy at the family’s négociant business. She will later become co-owner of the Domaine de la Romanée Conti for over 20 years. Acute observer, she spends time in the vines to understand their language. In 1988, she leaps at the opportunity to purchase a farm in Saint-Romain (in which she lived) and different plots over the next couple years to reach just under 4 hectares. This is where it all began for Domaine d’Auvenay. Biodynamic farming is the only way to run the vineyard for Lalou Bize-Leroy and she will never change philosophy: the living is sacred and man should only just go along, take part in this virtuous circle of life, without neither placing itself in the center, nor pulling out of it. All means are good to put these beliefs into practice starting with herbal teas and infusions to protect the plants. Lalou just won’t rely on chemistry. The soils are covered with grass, regularly ploughed, while the vines are never cropped but rather pruned in order to produce just the five bunches, thus avoiding green harvesting. We’ve been partners with Domaine d’Auvenay since the genesis of La Cave du Château, and we are delighted to share with you our few bottles of wine.
