Domaine GJ Bott

Julie, originally from Lyon, and Graeme from New-Zealand, met in 2011 at the Stéphane Ogier estate, where Julie was sales manager. Graeme had previously made Syrah in New-Zealand and wanted to confront this grape variety in its native terroir. There was no doubt about his talent as he quickly became the winemaker of the Ogier estate. According to Julie, she and Graeme became independent winemakers “by-chance”. Indeed, they planted their first viognier vines in their garden in 2015 hoping to learn how to work this variety. But the 35 ha parcel was located in Vérin on the Chéry hillside, a great terroir of the Condrieu PDO. The opportunity was too good to limit itself to a simple production for domestic use. Little by little, by establishing relationships with owners who wished to rent their vineyards, the couple managed to build up an estate of 7 hectares divided into 20 parcels in the various appellations of the area. In 2022, their vineyard is made up of: 50 ha of Côte-Rôtie (Côte brune and Côte blonde) whose gem is the « Lancement » parcel located in Côte blonde on micaschists. 2 ha of Condrieu, in the Vérin village on biotite granite. 1 ha of Saint-Joseph reds and whites in Chavannay and Saint-Pierre de Boeuf. 3 ha in IGP Collines-Rhodaniennes on the left bank of Seyssuel on micaschists soils which give birth to silky and fine Syrah. In addition to this vineyard, some red and white grapes from Crozes-Hermitage are bought. Julie points out that their vines are worked with a caterpillar tractor with intervine tools as well as with a winch, but that certain terraces (Chaillets) that are difficult to access prevent them from claiming the organic label. Against mildew and oidium, they use copper and sulphur and thanks to the windy climate in the area can limit to 5 or 6 treatments per year. Julie and Graeme became full-time winemakers in 2019, after finding an available winery in Ampuis. They want their vineyard to grow to 10 hectares and remain on a human scale. In their red wines, they seek fine tannins thanks to soft extractions (only one hilling-up per day at the beginning of the vatting process). For the Saint-Joseph and Côte-Rôtie, they partially use whole grapes. Each parcel is vinified separately in barrels of 3 to 4 wines. The ageing takes place over 9 to 20 months. In their whites, the winemakers seek tension, which is why 400L barrels are privileged without any use of stirring of the lees (bâtonnage). Ageing goes from 8 to 9 months. As a whole, Julie and Graeme Bott offer us wines from the Northern Rhône that rhyme with elegance and precision.
