Ranking notes: James Suckling 95/100
"I might have a slight preference for this over the 2001 but I can’t make up my mind yet. It seems to have more richness and sweetness, with loads of apple tart, caramel and spice character. The noble rot certainly did its good here. Long, long finish. Beautiful sweet wine. Drink or hold." James Suckling.

Château Guiraud

Château Guiraud is a prestigious wine estate located in the Sauternes appellation. Acquired in 1766 by the Guiraud family, Protestant merchants, the cru has consistently been recognized for the quality of its Sauternes, earning its classification as a 1st Grand Cru Classé in 1855. The estate spans 128 hectares, with 54 hectares dedicated to the Sauternes appellation. The vines, with an average age of 25 to 30 years and planted at a density of 6600 vines/hectare, are cultivated on diverse soils. These consist primarily of sandy gravels (80%) and clayey gravels (20%). The subsoil features sands, pure gravels, red clay, limestone marl, and fossilized oysters. Since 1996, the estate has been committed to environmentally friendly practices, becoming the first of the Premier Grands Crus Classés to be certified organic in 2011. This approach includes planting hedges to promote faunal development, identifying over 630 insect species, utilizing agronomic cover crops in the vine rows, and maintaining a collection of 145 Sémillon and Sauvignon clones. In line with this commitment to consumer transparency, the château has always refused to chaptalize its wine. Château Guiraud was also a member of the Botrytis (Sapros) wine club, an association of winemakers producing sweet wines exclusively through natural concentration. Significant changes have occurred at the property in recent years. In late 2021, entrepreneur Mathieu Gufflet became the main shareholder after acquiring stakes from Xavier Planty and Robert Peugeot. In 2022, Sandrine Garbay, renowned for her expertise, took over as general manager after leaving Château d'Yquem. Château Guiraud has shifted towards producing a contemporary Sauternes, characterized by a controlled sweetness. The grand wine is a blend of 65% Sémillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc. Vinification occurs with indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels, 80% new and 20% one-wine, followed by an 18-month aging period.
