Château Grand-Puy Ducasse

Château Grand Puy Ducasse, classified as a 5th Grand Cru in 1855, is the only Médoc château to vinify its wines in the heart of Pauillac town, on the banks of the Gironde. The history of the estate began in 1675 with Arnaud Ducasse's acquisition of a property. In 1820, his grandson modernized the technical facilities and built a vat room directly on the estuary's quays. The first harvest in these new facilities took place the same year. In 1822, the marriage of Paméla Ducasse and Édouard Duroy de Suduiraut consolidated the estate. The official consecration came on April 18, 1855, when Château Grand Puy Ducasse was classified as a 5th Grand Cru under the name "Artigues-Arnaud". Over the decades, the estate overcame challenges such as the phylloxera crisis. Since 1971, it has entered a phase of development. In 2005, CA Grands Crus, a subsidiary of the Crédit Agricole group, acquired the château and launched an ambitious vineyard restructuring plan. The Château Grand Puy Ducasse vineyard spans 40 hectares , divided into three main sectors on silico-gravelly Garonne gravels. These plots are adjacent to prestigious châteaux such as Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, and Pontet-Canet. The average age of the vines is around 25 years. The grape varieties are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (59%), Merlot (36%), and Petit Verdot (5%). The château is committed to sustainable viticulture, certified by Terra Vitis and HVE 3 (High Environmental Value Level 3), as well as SME and ISO 14001. Harvesting is done manually, followed by a double sorting (in the vineyard and by optical sorting) to ensure grape quality. Yields are carefully controlled at around 45 hl/ha. The winemaking and aging process combines tradition and innovation. The "Renaissance" project, inaugurated on July 4, 2024 , has revolutionized the facilities. The new vat room has doubled its capacity, increasing from 29 to 55 vats. It now includes 46 conical stainless steel vats and 7 concrete vats, allowing for plot-by-plot vinification. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats , and malolactic fermentation occurs mostly in tanks, with a small portion in new barrels. Aging lasts an average of 18 months in French oak barrels, about 50% of which are new for the Grand Vin. These practices give the wines an aging potential of 5 to 30 years. In summary, Château Grand Puy Ducasse combines a rich historical heritage with sustainable viticultural practices and major technological innovations. It produces Pauillac wines of great complexity and remarkable aging potential.
