The producer

Château Gruaud Larose

The history of this estate dates back to 1757, when Joseph Stanislas Gruaud brought together three of his own crus to form a single estate. Soon renowned for the quality of its wine, the château was awarded the title of Second Grand Cru Classé de Gironde for the commune of Saint-Julien in the 1855 classification. At the time of the Universal Exhibition, the château was owned by the de Bethman, Baron Sarget and de Boisgerard families. Shortly afterwards, Gruaud Larose was split in two between the Sarget and Bethmann families. Thanks to the successive purchase of both entities by Désiré Cordier, its new owner, the château was restored to its original size in 1935. This Saint Julien comprises 50 hectares of vineyards on a total surface area of 82 ha. The vines are planted on beautiful deep gravelly hilltops, the pebbles carried by the river from the Pyrenees during the Ice Age. Highly filtering, these gravelly soils are the ideal terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon, which has dominated the vineyard since the 1940s. When Alcaltel bought the estate in 1993, the winery was renovated. Thermo-regulated 100% wooden maceration vats are used for vinification. Since 1997, the owner has been Jean Merlaut, a pioneer in distance selling via minitel and then the Internet. He has appointed Stéphanie Lebaron as cellar master and Éric Boissenot as oenologist.The vineyard, planted at a density of 6,667 to 10,000 vines per hectare, is divided between 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The average age of the vineyard is 48 years. Vatting times vary from three weeks to one month. For several years now, Jean Merlaut has been turning to organic farming for his estates. Château Gruaud Larose has been certified organic since 2022. This Grand Médoc, rated 100/100 on several occasions by Robert Parker (including the 1986 vintage), produced fleshy, deep wines during the 1980s and 1990s. Its style has recently evolved towards finesse and elegance. The cru has always offered a high level of quality that many châteaux would envy. Even in light vintages, this wine is a model Saint Julien. Its second wine, Sarget de Gruaud Larose, is aged for 14 months in barrels (15% of which are new). The Grand Vin de Gruaud Larose is aged for 18 months in 80% new barrels.
