Château La Lagune

Château La Lagune, located in Ludon-Médoc, was classified as a Third Growth in the 1855 Médoc classification. It is the most prestigious wine in the Haut-Médoc appellation. The history of the château began in the 16th century with the acquisition of the ‘Village de La Lagune’ by Monsieur Eyral, who transformed the hamlet into a wine-growing estate. In the 17th century, Jean Lavaud, advisor to the King, expanded the estate thanks to his fortune. The Lavaud family had the current charterhouse built in the 18th century by renowned architects such as Portier and Voisin. The wine's reputation grew during the 18th and 19th centuries, culminating in its classification in 1855. During the first half of the 20th century, the château suffered from the consequences of the 1929 crisis and the two world wars. In 1958, Georges Brunet undertook major work to rebuild the vineyard and its charterhouse. In 1961, La Lagune was acquired by René Chayoux, owner of the Ayala champagne house, before being bequeathed to Monsieur Ducellier. Since 2000, under the impetus of the Frey family, Château La Lagune has been undergoing a complete revival. Major work has been undertaken in the vineyard and technical facilities. The cellar and vat room have been enlarged. The charterhouse has also been restored. Since 2004, Caroline Frey, oenologist and winegrower, has been managing the château with the aim of ‘awakening the sleeping beauty’ and exploiting its potential. The estate covers approximately 80 hectares of vineyards, planted on Garonne gravel soils composed of pink, yellow and white quartz, calcite, agate and silica. Thanks to this terroir, La Lagune wine is distinguished by its particular finesse. The château's grape varieties consist of approximately 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. The latter contribute to the structure of the château's wine. Caroline Frey decided to convert the entire La Lagune vineyard to organic farming in 2016. A team of twenty-five employees is dedicated to the vines. Since 2021, Château La Lagune has been awarded the Biodyvin label. This demanding label certifies that the work in the vineyards and the wine production meet biodynamic criteria. The grapes are harvested by hand. They are first sorted on a vibrating table, then by optical sorting, to retain only healthy, ripe berries. The grapes are completely destemmed and then sent to the fermentation vats. Vinification takes place in a modern winery equipped with temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Each plot is vinified separately. Maceration is gentle, promoting gradual extraction of tannins, colour and aromas. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels, 50% of which are renewed each year, for a period of 12 to 14 months. The château has chosen six different coopers. Château La Lagune is renowned for its elegance, finesse and ageing potential. It has a complex aromatic bouquet with notes of black fruit, cedar, tobacco and spices, and a balanced palate structured by silky tannins. 34 hectares of marshland and forest, inhabited by Landes marine cows, surround the vineyard and recall the Médoc's lagoon origins while preserving a rare species.
