The producer

Champagne J.L. Vergnon

Having inherited his vineyards in the area of Mesnil-sur-Oger (Côte des Blancs), Jean-Louis Vergnon quickly decided to stop working with the cooperative, and bottle his champagnes under his own name instead. The Estate is still family-owned: Didier Vergnon is now in charge. The plots are quite spread apart, and their exposures diverse, but the style of the Vergnon house is clearly defined around one grape variety: Chardonnay. The bubbles mirror the straightness and relative austerity of the legendary Grand Cru Mesnil-sur-Oger. The family also owns some vineyards in the neighbouring Grands Crus Oger and Avize. The soils are not weeded anymore, and chemical treatments are avoided when the quality of the vintage allows it. The yields are controlled, the objective being to harvest the healthiest grapes as possible. To go even further on their quest for purity and tension, the Vergnon block malolactic fermentations, and make their wines in stainless steel tanks (except for the Eloquence cuvée which has oak contact). Often austere in their youth, the champagnes will reveal themselves with time, and ravish amateurs of straight and frank bubbles.
