The producer

Clos Rougeard

The history of Clos Rougeard is inseparable from the Foucault family, who have been rooted in the lands of Chacé since 1664. For more than three centuries, eight generations of winemakers have succeeded one another, but it is the duo formed by brothers Jean-Louis (nicknamed "Charly") and Bernard (nicknamed "Nady") who forged the legend of the estate. As early as the 1970s, at a time when agrochemistry was triumphing, they made the visionary bet of a winegrowing approach without artifices, organic and demanding, proving to the world that Loire Cabernet Franc could rival the greatest classified growths. The death of Charly Foucault in December 2015 marked a decisive turning point. In June 2017, the estate was acquired by Martin and Olivier Bouygues, also owners of Château Montrose in Saint-Estèphe. Today, a new team continues this legacy under the general direction of Pierre Graffeuille. Since 2022, the technical management has been entrusted to Cyril Chirouze, while Richard Desouche, the emblematic vineyard manager of the estate, continues to watch over the vineyard. The vineyard now covers about 15 hectares (compared to 11 hectares historically, following recent acquisitions), divided into around twenty plots across the municipalities of Chacé, Varrains, and Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg. The tuffeau subsoil (Turonian chalk) forms the backbone of this terroir. Faithful to the philosophy of the Foucault family, the estate is certified organic. No synthetic molecules, herbicides, or pesticides are tolerated. The soils are plowed, and yields are kept extremely low to favor the concentration of the juices. The venerable age of the vines, some of which are over 100 years old, plays a key role in the depth of the wines. The winemaking at Clos Rougeard is characterized by indigenous yeast fermentations and gentle macerations, followed by long aging (18 to 24 months) in oak barrels, in the heart of deep, cool troglodyte cellars. Recently, a new gravity-fed winery was inaugurated to further refine the precision of the work, and the use of new oak has been slightly reduced on the whites to preserve their tension. The estate is distinguished by four unique parcel-based cuvées: Le Clos is a blend of clay-limestone parcels and serves as the estate's calling card. It offers vibrant fruit, floral notes, and an elegant structure typical of Cabernet Franc grown on tuffeau. Les Poyeux, from a 2.5-hectare parcel, is characterized by sandy soils over a limestone subsoil. This terroir gives the wine a velvety texture, airy finesse, and incomparable silkiness, often more accessible in its youth than Le Bourg. Le Bourg is the legendary red cuvée, coming from a parcel of about one hectare located in the heart of the village. On this thin clay soil over hard limestone, the very old vines (70-80 years old) produce a dense, powerful wine built to age for several decades. Le Brézé is an exceptional Chenin Blanc from about 1.5 hectares on a historic limestone hillside. It combines a sharp minerality with deep aromatic complexity, rivaling the finest white Burgundies.
