Domaine Laureau

Damien Laureau is one of those who felt an inner call from the vines. He resigned his job as the manager of a plant recycling company in Paris, in 1999. He took over an Estate, gathering both a vineyard and many trees, located in Sainte Gemmes sur Loire, with an asylum found in the Anjou region. Little by little, the winegrower diminished his exploitation surface, in order to focus on Savennieres, where the Damien Laureau estate now covers 8.5 hectares. This means a change of lifestyle but not a lesser dedication: from his previous job he learned that nothing is ever lost, but gets transformed instead. Biodiversity, and life within the soils keeps him awake, and he wishes to apply it to the vine. The conversion to biodynamics is an evidence, he obtained its certification in 2012. Here, no intrants nor synthesis products, but instead, a use of cowpats and horn silica as replacements. Finally, the doses of brass are drastically reduced. Everything concurs at encouraging the vines to throw their roots deep into the ground, through schists. Damien Laureau wishes to present the micro-terroirs of the Appellation, and vinifies exclusively single vineyard cuvées. The cuvée "Les Genêts" is fully expressive in its youth, it is made out of the very schists terroirs of the sandy soils. In the glass, the aromas develop with unequal freshness: subtle notes of white flowers, orange skins and quince. An artwork among artworks, the "Bel Ouvrage" is already a great classic. One to tatse at least once in your life! The schists bring depth and volume to the wine, it is intense and straight. The wine has been aged for 18 months with its lees. The powerful bunch of spices (liquorice, white pepper, and star anise) is mesmerizing. It announces with grace the full and sapid fruit of the wine, that is asking for several years of ageing. Once the " Bel Ouvrage" closed (and the bottle empty!), we are convinced of it: Master Chenin, standing on its branch, reigns as a master of the Loire.
