Domaine Mélaric

The Estate is the result of a meeting of two pupils from Anjou, who met on the benches of the agronomic school of Montpelliers. From this relationship, a common desire was born to find a way to own their own vineyard. Back in Saumur in 2005, the couple settled near Puy Notre Dame. In this area of « La Ceriseraie », the Estate was founded and named « Mélaric », as a contraction of their names Mélanie and Aymeric. At the time, neither winegrowers could afford vines in Saumur-Champigny. In 2008, they fell for a 4 hectares vineyard, near the small village of Argentay, previously managed for the production of sparklings. Like many landscapes in the Saumur-region, such as the famous Brézé or Poyeux, La Ceriseraie is a chalk hill, with various under soils. The top of the hill is sandy, with limestone added to the mix at mi-slope. The grapes used for the « Bille de Roche » cuvee grow there : this is the classic wine of the estate. In the glass, we taste a straight, frank and saline expression of Chenin. Further down the slope, we find chalk dating from the age of superior turonian (yellow and white chalk). Here are located a myriad of small slots of old vines of chenin and of cabernet franc, shaping the Clos de la Ceriseraie. Without a doubt this vineyard gives birth to the greatest wines of the valley. The density of this wine, aged 24 months in wooden vats and not filtered, is stunning. Pure as spring water, the Clos de la Cerisaie does not need to prove its greatness any more, much less its longevity. This is an eternal, tension-built Cathédral, like only the most beautiful chenin can achieve.
