The producer

Domaine Arretxea

The Arretxea estate, or "House of Stone" in the Basque language, was originally a family farm that Michel Riouspeyrous took over in 1989. The steep slopes of vines facing south, planted in terrasses, are cultivated using the biodynamics technics. The Estate was one of the pioneers of the rebirth of the Irouleguy Appellation, founded back in the seventies. The whites of the Estate are vibrant and profound, as if they were directly linked to their own diverse micro-slots: some are made of sandstone, schists and other limestone soils. The cuvées "Schistes" and "Grès" are built around a skeleton of saltiness and tension: both are made with the grape varieties Petit and Gros Manseng. This vibrant balance dominates when the wine is young, and with age, touches of honey and white truffle come to enrich the tasting experience. As for the reds, the Haitza cuvée is dominated by Tannat, and gains in suppleness and richness with each passing vintage.
