The producer

Domaine du Bel Air

The Gauthier family is undoubtedly at the very top of the Bourgueuil appellation, and the estate has been seducing for two generations the amateurs of great wines from the Loire Valley for two generations. Located in Benais, the vines are planted on the most limestone terroir of the region. These tuffeau-chalky soils render amazingly elegant wines, subtle and intense with depth. Pierre Gauthier signs his first vintage in 1995, and an immense work carried out in the vineyard and in the cellars now bears its fruits. The wines however need to be cellared a few years to allow the tannins of Cabernet Franc to polish. A monument among the wines of the Estate: the "Clos Nouveau." This plot, actually surrounded by stone walls, just like in Burgundy, gains its telluric strength from the chalk-tuffeau soil. The wine is aged for 24 months in vats having contained two or three wines, before being bottled with out filtration. After a ten year ageing period, its texture proves the noble roots of a grape variety that is too often maltreated. A voluptuous texture is paired with subtle and chalky tannins, and unleashes indefinite aromas of flowers and graphite.
