Domaine Fumey-Chatelain

Trained at Mâcon-Davayé in Burgundy, Marin was keen to get his feet wet in other winemaking contexts. He had the chance to make wine in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa for prestigious estates. Since 2015, Marin has returned to Arbois every year for the grape harvest. Returning to the Jura in 2020, the winemaker - assisted by his parents Raphaël and Adeline - has begun the official conversion of the 17-hectare estate, founded in 1980, to organic farming, and has turned his winemaking towards a more chiselled style. Marin enjoys vinifying the Arbois red grape varieties ploussard (or poulsard), trousseau and pinot noir, as they require greater creativity. The No Sin Tou Tsefs cuvée (a blend of the three red grape varieties) is the winemaker's desire to produce a joyful wine that combines the freshness of ploussard, the velvety smoothness of trousseau and the spicy character of Jura pinot noir. "It's easier to adjust the length of the vatting period with red grape varieties than with whites, where there's less to do," says the winemaker. "White wines have to come from great terroirs, of which there are many in the Jura," emphasises Marin. The wine is aged with almost all the lees. This gives rise to white wines with a reduced profile and smoky, grilled and iodised aromas, revealing the Jura terroir in their wilted version. The Savagnins matured under veil and the full-bodied yellow wines come from vineyards that are at least thirty years old. Each vintage is an opportunity to appreciate the winemaker's growing knowledge of his terroirs. Marin is proud of his family heritage. "We have ploussards planted in 1953 at a place called Fertans in Montigny-les-Arsures, which give us surprisingly tannic reds for this grape variety," says Marin. Similarly, the Les Capucins parcel comes from red melons planted in 1953, an old selection of Jura chardonnays with a lovely exotic flavour.
