The producer

Domaine Les Grandes Vignes

The Vaillant family, pioneers of dry white Anjou wines since 1993, heads a 55-hectare estate managed biodynamically (since 2008). The estate hand-harvests and vinifies its wines without the use of sulfur. The pure Chenin dry white wines particularly impressed us with their vibrant and crystalline expression. Like many elite Anjou estates, Domaine Les Grandes Vignes, located in Thouarcé within the Bonnezeaux PDO, has successfully transitioned to producing great dry Chenin wines. Among their 100% Chenin cuvées declared as "Vin de France," we especially noted La Varenne du Poirier for its smoky, toasted, and spicy character, and Les Mailles à l’Endroit for its smooth and opulent texture. La Varenne de Combre, aged in oak and sandstone jars, stood out for its density and mineral tension. All these cuvées owe their identity to the diverse exposures and soil types that make up their terroirs: grey and green schist, phtanite, quartz, shell limestone, sands, and rolled gravel. In the cellar, no exogenous inputs are used, and racking is kept to a minimum. Nearly 300 barrels receive meticulous attention to ensure optimal vinification and aging. For an estate of this size to produce such artisanal wines, it confirms that a wind of freedom is blowing over Anjou.
