Domaine Ponsot

The Morey Saint Denis village has been the headquarters to Domaine Ponsot since 1872. Over time, the Estate has always been very invested in the history of great Burgundy wines. In fact, the estate started bottling its own wines early on, before world war two. A great part of the wines were then exported to the United States, a rare feat at the time. Moreover, the family took part in 1936 in the implementation of the Burgundian Appellations into the modern AOC system (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée). More than ever, the Ponsot family now cherishes the respect of the soils, protecting the puzzle of prestigious Crus with great pride. 80% of the Estate's surface is ranked in Grands Crus: let us cite among them the Clos de la Roche, a legend among legends... On top of their research in biodiversity in the soils, and the enlightened observation of different cultural practices, the estate's style is unique. The pinots noirs are always harvested at great ripeness, with a supple texture when tasting. The ensuing vinification is natural, and made using old wooden tanks. The ageing also takes place within used barrels. The micro-oxygenation of the wine is sought after, but really no make up effect. A curiosity in the range: the old vines of aligoté (Clos des Monts Luisants). They render a cristal-like juice, with a saline finale. This wine can defy the odds and age for decades, a proof that centenial vines, when well cared for, are immortal. The Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru is a cathedral, the telluric power of the drink comes solely from the grapes and in no case from the ageing in barrels.
