The producer

Château Haut Marbuzet

Château Haut-Marbuzet, with origins dating back to the 18th century, has established itself as an iconic wine estate in Saint-Estèphe, capable of rivaling the classified Growths. Its renaissance began in 1952 with Hervé Duboscq's acquisition of seven hectares of vines. His son, Henri Duboscq, joined him in the 1960s and oversaw the estate's expansion to its current size of 75 hectares. Today, Henri's sons, Bruno and Hugues Duboscq, continue this family legacy. The Haut-Marbuzet vineyard rests on Günzian gravel soils with a clay-limestone subsoil. The Gironde estuary provides a unique microclimate that promotes optimal grape ripeness. The clay subsoil, which is well-suited to the Merlot grape, retains moisture during dry summers. The grape varieties planted include 55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. This high proportion of Merlot, atypical for the Left Bank, contributes to the characteristic roundness of the estate's wines. The vines, averaging 30 years old, are planted at a high density of 8,500 to 9,000 vines per hectare. The estate practices sustainable viticulture. Grapes are harvested manually, with a double selection process. Henri Duboscq was renowned for harvesting grapes at high ripeness, which resulted in opulent and generous Saint-Estèphe wines. In winemaking, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless steel vats. Starting in the 1980s, Haut-Marbuzet's signature became the use of 100% new oak for aging its wines in barrels for 15 to 18 months. A new winery, blending modernity with respect for tradition, was constructed in 2017. Château Haut-Marbuzet is still considered an estate producing opulent and luscious wines, offered at fair prices for uncompromising quality.
