Champagne Krug
Founded in Reims in 1843 by Johann-Joseph Krug, a non-conformist visionary from Mainz, the House of Krug immediately defined itself by a radical ambition. Contrary to the established practice that favored the vintage as the sole marker of prestige, Joseph Krug pursued a different dream: to create the best possible champagne, every year, regardless of climatic variations.
This philosophy had a foundational consequence. The House's main cuvée, today known as Krug Grande Cuvée, was never conceived as a non-vintage. As early as 1843, it was envisioned as the absolute Tête de Cuvée, the work of art recreated annually thanks to a vast library of reserve wines. As a result, Krug established itself as the first Champagne House to create only prestige cuvées.
Joseph Krug's vision has been perpetuated by an uninterrupted lineage, guiding six generations of the family. Today, this heritage is embodied by Olivier Krug, son of Henri Krug and a member of the sixth generation.
Oenological mastery is ensured by Julie Cavil, appointed Chef de Caves in 2020. She joined Krug in 2006 and spent 13 years working alongside Eric Lebel, ensuring a perfect transmission of the Krug style.
Krug is the only major Champagne House to ferment all of its clear wines in 205-liter antique oak barrels.
The Krug Grande Cuvée is the very embodiment of Joseph Krug's dream. It is not a non-vintage champagne; it is an Édition recreated each year. The House thus refers to the 170th Edition, the 171st Edition, and so on. The creation of a single Edition is a process of infinite patience, spanning more than 20 years of reserve wines.
While Krug is the House of blending, it paradoxically produces two of the world's most sought-after single-plot champagnes.
The Krug Clos du Mesnil comes from a single 1.84-hectare walled plot since 1698. The vines are located in the heart of the village of Mesnil-sur-Oger, an iconic terroir of the Côte des Blancs.
The Krug Clos d'Ambonnay is a $Blanc de Noirs$ made from 100% Pinot Noir. This cuvée comes from a 0.68-hectare plot located in the village of Ambonnay.
The House also produces the Krug Millésimé cuvée, aged for a minimum of 10 years in the cellar; Krug Rosé, composed of the Grande Cuvée to which red Pinot Noir wine is added; and the Krug Collection, which is a late-released Krug Millésime.
