Clos Canarelli

In the far south of Corsica, lays Bonifacio. The Figari vineyard, one of the sunniest in France, is exceptionally suited for winemaking, between sea and mountains. Such an incredible landscape, can only give birth to powerful yet classy wines. Within this micro-appellation, Yves Canarelli certainly is a figurehead: proud and enthusiastic, his wines have a strong identity. When he takes over the vineyard in the early 90s, Yves still produces his wines in the old wine cooperative of Bonifacio, along with other winemakers. Back then, he already distinguishes himself by replanting native grape varieties of the island, some as traditional as sciaccarellu, niellucciu and vermentinu but also lesser known ones: biancu gentile, carcaghjolu neru and minustellu. A wide range of 14 grapes varieties are present in total, a real asset for the Domaine in terms of possibilities. The vineyard is not weeded chemically and has the Demeter certification (biodynamic) since 2006. The following year, when Yves Canarelli finally gets his own wine cellar, his wines gain in stature. Another 2 years later and a plot of pre-phylloxera vines in the village of Orasi falls into his hands, from which he creates the mind-blowingly deep Tarra d’Orasi cuvée. Alta Rocca also deserves a mention: a pure and extremely graceful sciaccarellu with a stunning Burgundian touch. Last but not least, Tarra di Sognu places itself among the best vermentino of l’île de beauté (Island of Beauty). The vines clearly blossom on these limestone soils and pass on this delicate minerality to the wines. Outstanding!
