Ranking notes: Robert Parker 90/100
"As I have indicated numerous times in this journal, the second wine of Las Cases, Clos du Marquis, is one of the finest second wines being made in Bordeaux. Over recent years, it has become a wine of classified growth quality. The 1996 may turn out to be even better than the outstanding 1995. Both are exceptional wines, with the 1996 slightly thicker and more viscous, with more noticeable new oak, as well as more massive body, and a blockbuster finish. In contrast, the 1995 is the quintessentially elegant style of Las Cases, with copious quantities of sweet fruit, outstanding depth, ripeness, and overall equilibrium, but no sense of heaviness. Like so many of this estate's great wines, everything is in proper proportion, with the acidity, alcohol, and tannin well-integrated. The 1995 is slightly more up-front and precocious than the 1996, it can be drunk now as well as over the next 15 years." Robert M. Parker, Jr.

The producer

Clos du Marquis

Often mistakenly associated with the status of a second wine, Clos du Marquis is in reality a brand in its own right, a wine that distinctly expresses the unique identity of its terroir within the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation. It is a creation of the Delon family, also proprietors of the legendary Château Léoville Las Cases. Created in 1902, Clos du Marquis is not made from the young vines of the Grand Vin of Léoville Las Cases, as is the case for most second wines. Its existence is a deliberate choice to separate and enhance a specific set of plots. The name comes from a historic plot, the "Clos de la Marquise," and its production originates from a distinct vineyard, located further west within the appellation, surrounded by several Saint-Julien Classified Growths. The vineyard dedicated to Clos du Marquis lies on Quaternary gravel soils, but with a slightly different composition from those bordering the Gironde estuary. These soils, sandier on the surface with deeper clays, are composed of finer gravels. This geological distinctiveness imparts its personality to the wine. The grape blend is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon (approximately 64%), which provides structure and aging potential, complemented by Merlot (around 30%) and a touch of Cabernet Franc (about 6%). The expertise applied to Clos du Marquis is inherited from the methods that have made Léoville Las Cases renowned, as its vinification takes place within the cellars of the Grand Cru Classé itself. This centralization allows the wine to benefit from the same teams and state-of-the-art equipment, while ensuring a completely distinct vinification process. The grape lots from the Clos du Marquis plots are isolated and worked separately to preserve the integrity of their terroir. Harvesting is manual, followed by meticulous sorting. Vinification is carried out with great precision in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless steel vats. Aging then takes place in French oak barrels, with a moderate proportion of new wood, for a period of 14 to 18 months, in order to preserve the vibrancy of the fruit while adding elegant complexity.
