Domaine Bruno Clavelier

Domaine Clavelier is located on the route des Grands Crus, in the town of Vosne-Romanée. We can’t write about the Domaine’s history without mentioning the incredible depth of its vineyard. We are truly here in an ampelographic museum. The great majority of the vines have been replanted after the phylloxera crisis of the 1930s and are now one-hundred-year-old. The Clavelier have favoured since then vines from massal selection for their robustness and low yield. Extremely conscious of the importance of their unique terroir, the family has always banned chemical fertilizers and is Ecocert certified (organic). Instead, the soils are well worked, ploughed and nourished. A plant cover protects the soils during winter and enriches them in nitrogen. Biodynamic principles dictate the Domaine’s daily work. In the cellar, things are done in a similarly low-intervention fashion. Fermentation happens naturally under the action of indigenous yeasts. Depending on vintages, the Clavelier may use up to 30% of whole-bunch grapes. Lastly, in order to avoid using sulphur as much as possible, bottling is done using inert gas. As a result, the wines are extremely lively and perfect example of traditional Burgundy’s greatness.
