Domaine Guiberteau

Since Romain took over in 1996, Domaine Romain Guiberteau, located in Saint-Just-sur-Dive near Saumur, has quickly established itself as a must-know reference in the Loire Valley. Romain's journey is unique: initially a law student, he abandoned his studies in the early 1990s to dedicate himself to the family estate. Romain produced his first vintage in 1997, with around 5,000 bottles of red wine. The Domaine Guiberteau vineyard spans approximately 14 hectares, with the majority dedicated to Chenin Blanc and the remainder to Cabernet Franc. The estate's plots are spread across several communes within the Saumur appellation, including Bizay, Brézé, Chacé, Montreuil-Bellay, and Saint-Just-sur-Dive. The Brézé hill is particularly iconic, often compared to the "Montrachet of the Loire" for its exceptional potential, especially for Chenin Blanc. The soils vary: clay-limestone in Brézé and Bizay, and deep clay in Montreuil-Bellay. The region's climate, with its cold winters and moderate summers, is ideal for Chenin Blanc, promoting refreshing acidity and distinctive minerality. The age of the vines also varies, Romain Guiberteau is a strong advocate for organic farming. Conversion began in 2000, with fully organic practices implemented by 2003, and AB organic certification obtained from the 2007 vintage onwards. This involves the complete absence of synthetic products, pesticides, or herbicides, in favor of natural methods such as sulfur, copper, and plant decoctions. Permanent cover crops are maintained between the rows. The estate's winemaking philosophy is centered on an "absolute respect for the terroir" and "low intervention." Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested. For white wines, fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, often with whole-bunch pressing. Aging takes place in stainless steel tanks, foudres, or barrels, with minimal sulfites added before bottling. For red wines, maceration occurs in tanks, followed by fermentation in concrete tanks and aging in used oak barrels, to preserve the fruit and expression of the soil. Domaine Guiberteau's wines are renowned for their complexity, vitality, and freshness. The Chenin Blancs, particularly those from Brézé, are characterized by their taut character, notes of fresh fruit, grapefruit, flowers, and a chalky minerality. The red wines are pure, floral, with notes of crunchy red berries and earthy undertones. Among them, Saumur Rouge Les Arboises and Les Chapaudaises are considered prime examples.
