The producer

Domaine Gourt de Mautens

On the Crapon hill, west of the village of Rasteau, lies an iconic wine in its Appellation: The Domaine Gourt de Mautens. In 1993, when Jérôme Bressy joined the family estate, the grape was still sent to the Rasteau coop. Still the 15 hectares were cultivated following agronomic viticulture principles by his Dad, and Jérôme pushed even further, into biodynamics. The entire estate is like an open air museum of grape varieties: a majority of slots are planted with local grape varieties. On clay-limestone marls, we find massal selections of Grenache mainly, but also Counoise, Mourvèdre, and many more. Jérôme prefers the gobelet pruning, which cost him the Rasteau Appellation in 2010, since this pruning method was not authorised for Syrah. The old vines render very low yields, between 10-15hectoliters per hectare. The winegrower pushes the ripening to the maximum, and should always be the last to harvest, in october or early november. In the cellar, he keeps his interventions minimal. There are no yiests added, no gluing, and wines are not filtered. The ageings take place now in large tanks, or half-hogsheads. He is looking forward to signing great wines, with volume, complexity and roundness.
