Domaine Hubert Lignier

Located in the heart of the village of Morey-Saint-Denis, Domaine Hubert Lignier unquestionably belongs to the elite estates of the Côte de Nuits. Around 1880, Jacques Lignier laid the foundations of what would become one of the region’s most prestigious estates by acquiring his first vineyard parcels. The domaine was passed down from father to son, beginning with Jules Lignier in the early 20th century, who worked to restore the qualitative potential of the vineyard with the support of his sons: Georges, Maurice, and Henri. Under the leadership of Henri Lignier, the estate began to take its modern form, although at that time it covered only about 4.5 hectares. The decisive push toward international recognition came with Hubert Lignier, who took over in 1959. He strengthened the estate through strategic acquisitions and parcel exchanges, elevating the quality of the wines to exceptional levels. Today, the domaine is run by Laurent Lignier, representing the fifth generation. Domaine Hubert Lignier covers approximately 11 hectares, most of which are located in the emblematic villages of the Côte de Nuits: Morey-Saint-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin, and Chambolle-Musigny. The Clos de la Roche Grand Cru appellation is undoubtedly the soul of the estate. The parcels farmed by the Lignier family are spread across two distinct climats: “Monts Luisants” (around 0.62 hectares) and “Fremières” (around 0.28 hectares). The vines, planted between 1953 and 1965, send their roots deep into soils composed of limestone, clay, and marl resting on a pearly limestone slab. This geological configuration gives the domaine’s Clos de la Roche remarkable power and intensity. In addition to its Grand Crus Charmes-Chambertin and Griotte-Chambertin, the estate owns an impressive portfolio of Premier Crus and village lieux-dits, each expressing a precise nuance of the Côte de Nuits terroir. The Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru “Vieilles Vignes” cuvée comes from a blend of the climats “Les Faconnières” and “Les Chenevery”, with vines planted between 1936 and 1952. The Morey-Saint-Denis “Trilogie” is produced from the blend of three lieux-dits: Chenevery (60%), Porroux (30%), and Clos Solon (10%). The Gevrey-Chambertin “Les Seuvrées”, located in the southern part of the Gevrey appellation, produces wines with a supple yet energetic texture. The Chambolle-Musigny “Les Bussières”, a direct neighbor of the Clos de la Bussière of the Roumier family, yields vibrant and long wines from vines that are over 50 years old. The presence of parcels in Volnay and Monthélie reflects Laurent Lignier’s desire to explore more diverse terroirs while applying the same technical rigor as on his historic lands. Since Laurent Lignier’s arrival, and especially from 2011 onward, the estate has undertaken a profound transformation of its vineyard practices. Although soil cultivation (ploughing and hoeing) is a family tradition reintroduced in the 1990s by Romain, Laurent pushed this philosophy further, leading to official organic certification in 2019. The estate’s philosophy is based on the idea that “the soil is the source of the success of a great wine.” To preserve this ecosystem, the use of chemical herbicides and insecticides has been completely banned for more than 25 years. The soils are worked mechanically to encourage the development of microorganisms, which are essential to maintaining vine balance. As part of its adaptation to climate change, the estate has implemented several innovative practices such as cover cropping and sowing legumes, the use of locally produced compost to amend the soils, canopy management with higher vine trimming, and massal selection from its own old vines. Yields at the estate are kept very low, ranging from 20 to 55 hectoliters per hectare depending on the appellation and the vintage. This control is crucial to ensure optimal fruit concentration, particularly on the thin clay-limestone soils characteristic of the slopes of Morey-Saint-Denis. Harvesting is carried out exclusively by hand, with strict sorting in the vineyard by pickers, followed by a second sorting on a sorting table in the winery to eliminate any grapes that do not meet perfect sanitary standards. The winery, installed at “Grand Cèdre” since 2008, is designed to preserve the integrity of the fruit thanks to gravity-flow facilities. The Lignier method is characterized by minimal intervention, aiming to allow the terroir to express itself with sensuality and authenticity. Once sorted, the grapes are generally destemmed, although Laurent Lignier increasingly uses whole clusters (often around 25–30%) to bring freshness and structural complexity to the wines. Vinification takes place in vats with cold pre-fermentation maceration. Fermentations are initiated exclusively by indigenous yeasts. The wines are then aged in oak barrels for up to 22 months. The proportion of new oak varies from 20% to 50% depending on the cuvée. Laurent favors lightly toasted barrels from several coopers in order to avoid marking the wines with excessive oak influence.
