Domaine Lafarge Vial
Domaine Lafarge Vial was established in 2014 in Fleurie (Beaujolais) by Frédéric Lafarge, heir to Domaine Michel Lafarge in Volnay, and his wife Chantal Vial. Their children Elénonore, Clothilde and Maxime-Henri manage the estate.
The quality of the terroirs of Fleurie, Côte-de-Brouilly or Chiroubles on which Domaine Lafarge Vial is established is comparable to those of the Côte d’Or. It is worth noting that in the 1930s, the Beaujolais crus sold for more than some Burgundies.
The Lafarge Vial vineyard covers a total area of 7 hectares, of which 4.5 ha are in Fleurie, 2 ha in Chiroubles and 0.5 ha in Côte-de-Brouilly. The philosophy of the estate is based on highly rigorous agricultural practices. From its inception, the estate opted for organic and biodynamic certification (Demeter). The vines were planted in the 1960s and 1980s from sélections massales of Gamay. They are located on steeply sloped plots, often on pink granite soils.
Vineyard work includes plowing by horse on the steepest slopes. Winemaking focuses on very gentle extraction in order to preserve the delicate character of the Gamay grape variety. The grapes are harvested manually and fermented using indigenous yeasts, in concrete vats. Vinification is carried out with destemmed grapes. Maceration is short, generally 10 to 15 days, and extraction is limited by light remontages and a few pigeages.
Aging takes place over 12 to 15 months. This stage is carried out exclusively in used oak barrels (228 l and 350 l) as well as foudres, often recovered from the family estate in Volnay. The use of neutral wood ensures slow micro-oxygenation necessary for the integration of tannins. The wines are generally bottled without fining or filtration.
Domaine Lafarge Vial produces five distinct cuvées: a Chiroubles. A Côte-de-Brouilly "Brulhié." A generic Fleurie which blends several plots. The Fleurie "Joie du Palais" and the Fleurie Clos Vernay.
