The producer

Domaine des Trois Trucs

The Domaine des Trois Trucs was founded in 2023 in the village of Assas (north of Montpellier) by Mathis Rougée, born in 2001, and his brother Théo, born in 1998. The two brothers took over the vineyards planted by their father with the idea of "accompanying nature without trying to control it." Eager to be the interpreters of the terroir, they named their estate after the three hills, or "trucs" in Occitan, that host their vineyards. Out of the original 11 hectares, the brothers kept only the 4 hectares with the best exposure, where the terroir offered true qualitative coherence. The remaining vineyards, located in the midst of garrigue, will be partially uprooted and left fallow, before being replanted with a variety of grape varieties. Mathis Rougée began his journey at Mas Bruguière, a pioneering estate for quality in the Languedoc, where he learned discipline and precision. He later met Emmanuel Reynaud at Château des Tours, famous for his virtuoso approach to winemaking. His brother Théo traveled the world, from Burgundy (Faiveley) to Australia, before settling at Domaine Roc des Anges, which practices biodynamics in Roussillon. These two solid backgrounds point to bright prospects for the future. The vineyard is located in Guzargues, a village adjacent to Assas, where it benefits from maritime influences. The Rougée brothers created two single-vineyard cuvées that correspond precisely to the location of their vines on the surrounding hills, the famous Three “trucs,” named Font de l’Euze, le Patus, and Montalivet. The cuvée Lop y Leonis comes from a blend of parcels of vines situated on the arid hilltops. These terroirs, planted at 200 meters above sea level, benefit from a marine breeze that is particularly beneficial in the summer. The cuvée consists of 40% Grenache, 40% Mourvèdre, 10% Cinsault, and 10% Syrah. These grape varieties were planted on a clayey-sandy soil rich in large, silica-laden pebbles, offering excellent drainage. The grapes, from low yields, are placed into fermentation tanks as whole as possible (20% whole clusters are kept). The traditional fermentation lasts about ten days in vats. The aging process is spread over twelve months, with 70% in tank and 30% in used barrels from Stockinger to avoid imparting too much oak flavor to the wines. The cuvée Cincèdre comes from vines located lower down the three "trucs," on a limestone substrate covered with pebbles and clay. These parcels, planted at 150 meters of altitude, are less exposed to wind and are better protected from water stress. The cuvée consists of 80% Cinsault, with Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah making up the remaining 20%. The pride of the winemakers is their new planting of local Grenache Noir (from 1960s vines) interplanted with Piquepoul Noir. They have also planted parcels in the valley bottoms dedicated to white grapes like Grenache Gris and Clairette, which will benefit from the coolness of the area. Mathis and Théo Rougée have a true vision for the future. They understand that by choosing to plant a vineyard, they are making a decision that will last for more than a century. Let’s wish them good luck with this courageous and noble endeavor, which is already delighting the hearts of wine lovers.
