Domaine Paul Meunier

Domaine Paul Meunier-Centernach, established in Saint-Arnac, was founded in 2013 by Paul Meunier, originally from Burgundy (Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron), and joined in 2014 by Lucile Morin. The name "Centernach" refers to the ancient Occitan name of this village in the upper Agly valley. The estate comprises about ten hectares of old vines, often sixty years old, spread over black schists in Maury and granitic sands in Lesquerde. The management of the vineyard is certified organic and is inspired by the principles of biodynamics. The soil is worked by Perrine Meunier, Paul’s sister, who uses her horse to avoid soil compaction and preserve its porosity. The estate plants fruit trees in the heart of the vines to regulate the microclimate and limit erosion. In the cellar, the approach is resolutely minimalist: exclusive use of indigenous yeasts, gentle extractions with limited punching down of the cap, and aging in old Burgundian barrels from the family estate. This technical precision aims to exalt the natural freshness of the grapes despite the extreme climatic conditions of the Roussillon. Among the estate's cuvées, two wines particularly caught our attention. The Maury rouge cuvée Falgueyra Nord, a fortified natural sweet wine made from 100% Grenache Noir, whose grapes are foot-trodden in a lagar (as in the Douro Valley) before fortification on the skins. The 10-month aging in barrels produces a rich wine with aromas of black fruits and cocoa. The Rancio Sec, made from pure Macabeu planted in 1950 on granitic and schistose soils, revives a thousand-year-old Catalan tradition. It undergoes five years of oxidative aging in old barrels without any topping up (ouillage). Natural evaporation concentrates the wine, raising the alcohol level from 14% to 19% without the addition of alcohol. This nectar offers unique complexity with notes of walnut, curry, and a persistent saline finish. Recognized by critics as one of the finest expressions of modern Roussillon, the estate produces fewer than 50,000 bottles per year.
