Château Malescot Saint Exupery

Château Malescot Saint-Exupéry is a historic estate in the Margaux appellation, consecrated as a 3rd Grand Cru Classé during the imperial classification of 1855. The origin of its name dates back to 1697 when Master Simon Malescot, advisor to King Louis XIV, acquired the property and gave it his name. In 1827, Count Jean-Baptiste de Saint-Exupéry, ancestor of the writer, took over the château and joined his family name to the estate's existing one. When Paul and Roger Zuger acquired the estate in 1955, the property had only 7 hectares of vines. The challenge was to rebuild the vineyard to restore its renown. For three generations, the Zuger family, now led by Jean-Luc Zuger, has worked toward this goal. For many years, the estate has benefited from the expertise of oenologist Michel Rolland. Today, the Château Malescot Saint-Exupéry vineyard extends over an area of 28 hectares in the heart of the Margaux appellation. Its terroir is characterized by Pyrenean gravel which is highly favorable for the proper ripening of Bordeaux grape varieties and deep root penetration for the vines. The vineyard distribution takes into account the structure and nature of the soils. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot account for 50% and 35% of the grape mix, respectively. Cabernet Franc represents 10% of the vineyard surface, and Petit Verdot, 5%. These last two varieties contribute to the wines' aromatic complexity. The planting density is 10,000 vines per hectare, and the average age of the vineyard is 45 years. Annual production amounts to 120,000 bottles. The estate's philosophy is centered on respect for the vine and the environment. This commitment is attested by the achievement of High Environmental Value (HVE) Level 3 certification. The harvest is done manually and sorted first in the vineyard and then in the cellar. The vat room is equipped with temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete vats, allowing for precise temperature management during fermentation. Fermentations take place without the use of added yeasts. The average duration of vatting is 31 days. Aging lasts 12 to 14 months in 70% new barrels on fine lees, with bâtonnage (lees stirring). The final blend is made after aging, and bottling is carried out without fining or filtration. This technical decision maximally preserves the organoleptic qualities and the creamy, refined texture sought by the estate. The final blend of the Grand Vin is traditionally dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, the proportion of which can be adjusted depending on the vintage to ensure freshness and structure (for example, 60% Cabernet Sauvignon for the 2018 vintage, complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Franc). The estate also produces a second wine, La Dame de Malescot.
