The producer

Château du Tertre

Château du Tertre is a fifth-growth Grand Cru Classé from Margaux whose history dates back to 1590. Among its recent owners is Philippe Capbern-Gasqueton, who, starting in 1960, contributed to developing the château's reputation. In 1997, Eric Albada Jelgersma renovated the château and modernized the winemaking cellars. Since January 2021, management has been entrusted to the Helfrich family, founders of Grands Chais de France. Located on one of the highest gravelly hilltops in the Médoc, at an altitude of approximately 24 meters, the 80-hectare property includes a 52-hectare AOC Margaux vineyard in a single block. The terroir is primarily composed of gravel with sand, ensuring optimal drainage. The planting density is 9,200 vines per hectare. The average age of the vines is about 35 years. The grape varieties in the vineyard are distributed between Cabernet Sauvignon (63%), Merlot (14%), Cabernet Franc (11%), and Petit Verdot (12%). To preserve the expression of the terroir, Château du Tertre uses different types of containers during winemaking. These include oak vats, ovoid food-grade concrete vats, and stainless steel vats. These vats are temperature-controlled and gravity-fed, allowing for precise plot-by-plot vinification that is more respectful of the fruit. Malolactic fermentation takes place partly in oak barrels (40%) and partly in concrete vats (60%). The grand vin is aged on average for 18 months in oak barrels. The proportion of new wood used rarely exceeds 40%. Château du Tertre red wine is fined with egg whites, a traditional clarification method. The wines are renowned for their aging potential, able to develop and flourish for 10 to 25 years, or even more.
