The producer

Château Gazin

Château Gazin stands out with its 26-hectare vineyard in a single block, a rare characteristic in Pomerol, an appellation where properties are often fragmented. The Gazin vineyard, located in the eastern part of the Pomerol plateau, directly adjoins those of Pétrus and Château L'Evangile, other leading estates of the appellation. The history of Château Gazin began in the 18th century. The château was built on the site of the former "Hôpital de Pomeyrols," constructed by the Knights of Saint-John of Jerusalem in the 12th century. Louis Soualle, the great-grandfather of the current owners (5th generation of the de Baillencourt dit Courcol family), acquired it at the beginning of the 20th century. Château Gazin's terroir consists of Gunzian gravel resting on a subsoil rich in blue and green clays, containing iron oxide. These specific clays, known as "smectites," are essential for their water-retention capacity, ensuring a constant and moderate water supply to the vines. These clays are the same as those found at Pétrus. The estate also benefits from some of the highest elevations in Pomerol, reaching up to 40 meters. The Château Gazin vineyard is planted with 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines is 35 years, with some plantings dating back to 1942, contributing to the concentration and complexity of the wines. Planting density varies from 5,500 to 7,000 vines per hectare. Château Gazin is committed to sustainable viticulture, certified HVE Level 3. The winemaking process begins with a first sorting carried out by the harvesters in the vineyard, followed by two additional sorts (before and after destemming) upon arrival at the winery. Alcoholic fermentations are conducted in small concrete vats, managed separately by grape variety and by plot, followed by a two to three-week maceration period with the skins. After maceration, the free-run juice is drawn off, and the remaining pomace is pressed, with the press wines kept separately. Malolactic fermentation then takes place, either in barrels or in vats, depending on the batches. The wines are aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, with 50% new wood, and are racked approximately every three months. Château Gazin wines possess significant aging potential, capable of evolving gracefully for fifteen to twenty years, or even longer.
