The producer

Château Haut Batailley

Château Haut-Batailley, a Fifth Grand Cru Classé in 1855, is situated at the entrance to the Pauillac vineyard, marked by the distinctive Tour l'Aspic. Its history was closely tied to that of its neighbor, Batailley, until their separation in 1942. In 2017, the Cazes family, already owners of Châteaux Lynch-Bages and Ormes de Pez, acquired Haut-Batailley, ushering in a new chapter for the estate. In 2017, the vineyard spanned 22 hectares of Garonnaise gravels. Beginning in 2018, following a thorough study of its terroirs, an additional 19 hectares classified as AOC Pauillac were planted on soils that had lain fallow for many years. This initiative effectively doubled the vineyard's surface area to 41 hectares in just three years. The Haut-Batailley vines are located in the southern part of the Pauillac appellation, bordering Saint-Julien. The grape varietal composition is typical of Pauillac, featuring Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Viticulture at Château Haut-Batailley emphasizes precision and addresses environmental concerns, with a particular focus on enhancing biodiversity. In 2022, over 910 trees and shrubs of 14 different varieties were planted within the vineyard, demonstrating this commitment. During the manual harvests, a triple sorting process is implemented: first in the vineyard, then before, and again after destemming. The blend for the grand vin typically comprises 60% to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% to 40% Merlot. The grand cru is aged in 60% new oak barrels for 14 to 16 months. Château Haut-Batailley produces elegant and harmonious wines with a fine tannic structure, designed to gain complexity with age.
