The producer

Château La Fleur-Pétrus

The Château La Fleur-Pétrus is an emblematic property of the Pomerol appellation, renowned for its fine, round, and elegant wines. The history of Château La Fleur-Pétrus dates back to the 18th century, taking its name from its position between the localities "Petrus" and "Lafleur." The acquisition by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1950 marked a turning point, propelling the estate towards extraordinary quality. Christian Moueix, who took over in 1978, supervises production with the same rigor as for Pétrus and Trotanoy. The vineyard expanded to nearly 19 hectares in 1995, with new plots added in 2012 by Édouard Moueix. Since 2007, Éric Moueix, assisted by the oenologist Jean-Claude Berrouet, has perpetuated this tradition of excellence. The terroir of Château La Fleur-Pétrus is at the heart of the Pomerol plateau, at one of the appellation's highest elevations. It is composed of deep gravelly clay soils with an iron-rich sublayer. The entire vineyard benefits from a unique blend of gravels, deep clays, and "crasse de fer." The grape varieties are primarily Merlot (91%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (6%) and Petit Verdot (3%). Château La Fleur-Pétrus was the first to plant Petit Verdot in Pomerol, an innovation to cope with climate change. Winemaking at Château La Fleur-Pétrus is "extremely precise but quite traditional." It begins with manual harvesting and rigorous double sorting. Fermentation takes place in thermo-regulated concrete and stainless steel vats, followed by gentle maceration. The wine is then aged for 16 to 22 months in oak barrels, 50% of which are new. Château La Fleur-Pétrus is distinguished by its deep purple-ruby color. On the nose, it offers a complex and rich aromatic bouquet, with notes of red and black fruits (plum, blackberry, black cherry), violet, spices, and earthy nuances (truffle, graphite). On the palate, it is full-bodied, dense, and velvety, with a round structure and a beautiful length. The integration of tannins is graceful, leading to a smooth and persistent finish. The aging potential is remarkable, generally extending from 10 to 20 years, or even more, depending on the vintage.
