The producer

Le Pin

Château Le Pin is a micro-estate in the Pomerol appellation on Bordeaux's Right Bank, whose history and cult wine status are based on an ambition for uncompromising quality. The modern history of the estate began in 1979 with the acquisition of a one-hectare plot by Jacques Thienpont, from the family that owns Vieux Château Certan. The name "Le Pin" was retained, referring to the solitary tree (pine) that stood there. Although the purchase was initially deemed expensive, Thienpont's faith in this terroir proved prophetic. Today, Le Pin covers an area of only 2.2 hectares. The vineyard is planted 100% with Merlot. The average age of the vines is around 38 years. The terroir, located on the Pomerol plateau, has an ideal southern exposure and is composed of sandy gravel and clay, resting on a limestone base. The presence of "crasses de fer" (ferric traces/iron deposits) is often cited as the crucial element conferring early maturity and an opulent aromatic profile to the Merlot. Production is naturally very limited, averaging only 600 to 700 cases (7,200 to 8,400 bottles) per year, which is the main factor in its scarcity and price. The estate does not produce any official second wine. This demanding standard sometimes leads to a complete absence of production, as was the case for the 2003 vintage, which was entirely declassified following the heatwave. Since 2012, winemaking has taken place in a new, modern cellar, designed with meticulous precision. Fermentation is carried out in a micro-vat room composed of seven small stainless steel tanks (from 15 to 42 hectoliters), allowing for plot-by-plot vinification. A key element of the method is the exclusive use of gravity to move the wine, thereby minimizing mechanical stress and preserving the purity of the fruit. Historically, Le Pin is also recognized as one of the pioneers of malolactic fermentation in new barrels on the Right Bank, a technique initially fortuitous due to lack of equipment, but which allowed for earlier integration of the wood and softening of the tannins. The wine is then aged for approximately 18 months in 75 % new French oak barrels. Le Pin's international aura was largely shaped by the influence of critic Robert Parker, who awarded the 1982 vintage a 100/100 score. This wine has thus become one of the most expensive in the world and a prime investment for collectors. Château Le Pin illustrates the victory of an exceptional terroir, magnified by rigorous viticulture and oenology, beyond traditional Bordeaux classifications.
