The producer

Champagne Benoît Lahaye

Benoit Lahaye has been in the Champagne since his earliest childhood : his family has always worked the vineyard from near or far. It was the grandfather’s passion for the noble beverage that prompted Benoit Lahaye to take over the estate in Bouzy. This village curls itself in the south east part of the Mountain of Reims. The 1885 classification erected the vineyard as a Grand Cru, to crown it kingdom of pinot noir. After studying at the wine school of Avize, Benoit Lahaye took over the property at the end of the 80’s. He meets his future wife Valerie who lends him a hand during the first harvests. The dynamic involved is quickly turned towards the work of the living. Starting in the 1990s, the Domaine is conducted in organic agriculture (certification in 2007), and the myriad of exchanges with Pierre Masson pushes Benoit to introduce biodynamics on all plots. The vines are grassed and then protected with natural composts and herbal teas prepared on site. Ploughing is now done by the mare, so as not to press the soil. The 4,5 hectares vineyard is mainly composed of the black grape variety, present at 85%. The grapes are harvested when healthy and ripe, with a potential level of alcohol of 11 degrees. A vibrant raw material that does not undergo yeast or chaptalization. Malolactic fermentation is always naturally carried out, and a homeopathic dose of sulfur protects the must after this second stage of fermentation. The light wines are aged in «reducing» environment (meaning protected from oxidation) and on fine dregs in 228 litres barrels for at least 10 months. Without a doubt, the vineyard continues to inspire the young generation of winemakers who are looking to produce living wines, true vectors of emotion. The wines of Domaine Lahaye are styling exercises, spherical and mouthwatering wines, to taste at least once in one’s lifetime.
