The producer

Château Lascombes

Château Lascombes, a Second Growth Classified since 1855, is a historic wine estate with origins dating back to 1681. The first vines were planted under the direction of Antoine Lascombes, whose family led the estate until the French Revolution. The current château was built in 1875 by the architect Louis Garros in a Neo-English style. In the early 20th century, amidst an economic crisis, the château fell into some neglect. During World War II, it was requisitioned and used by Allied forces as a military headquarters. Starting in 1952, it was taken over by Alexis Lichine with the participation of David Rockefeller, who restructured the vineyard. Alexis Lichine managed the property for nearly two decades until the château was sold in 1971. From 2000 to 2010, while managed by the MASCF insurance company, the château produced some excellent vintages. Since October 2022, it has been owned by the Lawrence family, who also own Heitz Cellar in Napa Valley. The oenologist Axel Heinz has been promoted to general manager. The terroir of Lascombes is a mosaic of gravel, clay, sand, and limestone spread over approximately 130 hectares. It is planted with Merlot (50%), Cabernet Sauvignon (45%), and Petit Verdot (5%). The viticultural practices are part of a sustainable farming approach. The grapes are harvested by hand. The blending of the grand vin in recent vintages prioritizes the château's original plots planted with Cabernet Sauvignon with the goal of producing a classic Margaux. Recent blends favor Cabernet Sauvignon (67%), supplemented by Merlot (30%) and Petit Verdot (3%). Since the 2023 vintage, the winemaking process has been moving towards gentle extractions. Fermentation is carried out with great precision thanks to a four-level gravity-flow winery and parcel-by-parcel vinification in wood and stainless-steel vats. Maceration times range from 20 to 30 days and differ from one plot to another. The aging, which lasts 18 to 20 months, is conducted in barrels, large wooden vats (foudres), and amphorae. The percentage of new wood has decreased in recent vintages. The Grand Vin, Château Lascombes, is renowned for its power, balance, and aging potential, with complex aromas of black fruit, spices, and toasted notes. The Château also produces a second wine, Chevalier de Lascombes.
