Clos Fourtet

Nestled at the gates of the village of Saint-Émilion, Château Clos Fourtet, Premier Grand Cru Classé B, stands as an unmissable reference in the appellation. The estate's origins date back to the Middle Ages, where it served as a stronghold, the "Camp Fourtet," to protect the city of Saint-Émilion. The surrounding walls that still encircle the property today bear witness to this historical past. Over the centuries, different families succeeded one another, each contributing to forging the identity of the vineyard. In 2001, a new chapter opened with the acquisition of the château by the Cuvelier family. The 20-hectare vineyard extends in a single block on Saint-Émilion's asteriated limestone plateau. This unique geological formation promotes optimal natural drainage and moderate water supply. The clay-limestone soils force the vines to plunge their roots deep, thus capturing the mineral complexity that characterizes the estate's great wines. The grape varieties are dominated by Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Work in the cellar is a continuation of the high standards applied to the vineyard. Grapes are entirely hand-harvested, and undergo a rigorous double sorting. Vinification is "parcel-by-parcel" to respect the identity of each terroir. The fully gravity-fed cellar allows grapes to be transported to thermoregulated stainless steel vats without pumping, thus preserving their integrity. Gentle extractions are favored to reveal the purity of the fruit and the minerality of the terroir. Aging is an emblematic stage that takes place for 14 to 18 months in the heart of the estate's spectacular underground cellars. Carved into the limestone plateau, these galleries offer perfect natural aging conditions. Aging takes place in French oak barrels, partially new depending on the vintage, which refines the tannic structure and develops the wine's aromatic complexity. The prestige of Château Clos Fourtet is officially recognized by the Saint-Émilion wine classification. The château has confirmed its rank as Premier Grand Cru Classé B, a distinction that acknowledges the consistent quality and excellence of its production.
