Château d'Armailhac

Château d'Armailhac is a wine estate located in the Pauillac appellation, in the heart of the Médoc. It holds the prestigious status of Cinquième Grand Cru Classé, a recognition obtained during the official classification of 1855. This château is an integral part of the Mouton-Rothschild family of vineyards. Founded in the 18th century, the estate was initially known as Château Mouton d'Armailhacq. In 1933, Baron Philippe de Rothschild acquired the property. As early as 1956, he renamed the estate Mouton-Baron-Philippe. Later, in 1975, in homage to his late wife, Baroness Pauline de Rothschild, the name was changed to Mouton-Baronne-Philippe. Finally, in 1989, the property reverted to its original name, Château d'Armailhac. The château's vineyard spans 80 hectares of deep gravel, clay, and limestone. The vines, with an average age of 40 years , are planted at a high density of 8,500 to 10,000 vines per hectare. The grape varietal composition is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (52 %) , complemented by Merlot (38%) , Cabernet Franc (8 %), and Petit Verdot (2 %). Vineyard management at Château d'Armailhac is based on a respectful approach to the terroir, including massal selection , the use of cover crops, and composted manure. The harvests are entirely manual , with selection refined by optical sorting. Yields per hectare are around 42 hectoliters on average , though they can be as low as 32 hl/ha in certain vintages. The winery is equipped with 50 temperature-controlled vats of different sizes, allowing for precise parcel-by-parcel vinification. Each batch is monitored and tasted daily. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 16 to 18 months. The percentage of new oak varies, from around 30% to 50% for recent vintages. Château d'Armailhac produces wines that combine natural elegance with the power characteristic of the Pauillac appellation. Its wines are distinguished by intense aromas of black fruits, complemented by complex notes of cedar, tobacco, graphite, and spicy touches. A Pauillac lamb would make a perfect pairing with the finest vintages of the cru.
