Domaine Antoine Sanzay

Antoine Sanzay undoubtedly embodies a new generation of dashing winegrowers of the Saumur region. A generation which is aware of its vegetal heritage and approaches its profession with devotion and respect for lifecycles. Antoine is leading the way in this field. The young man took over the family estate in 1999, after his father's death. The estate’s 11 hectares are worked without synthetic inputs, and their average yield is 45 hectolitres/hectare. While he is not yet seeking certification, the winegrower is sensitive to the biodynamic approach. At the Domaine, each parcel of land gives birth to a distinct cuvée, thus highlighting the plurality of the Saumur subsoil. The Poyeux is a must-try, its grapes come from a plot close to the bedrock in Chacé. Interestingly, unlike the famous Poyeux du Clos Rougeard which benefits from a south-east exposure on silica-clay soils, Domaine Sanzay’s Poyeux stands out by its clay-limestone soil. Integrity and minerality are the key words of this cuvée that one must learn to long for. Finally, its peony and violet floral notes will undoubtedly conquer you. While the Domaine’s wines are sometimes austere in their youth, their finesse and freshness come to shine when aged appropriately.
