Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet stands as a leading figure in viticulture within the Côte de Nuits, Burgundy. Based in Fixin, this family-owned estate is renowned for its ability to express the unique character of its terroirs through wines of great finesse and authenticity. The history of Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet spans at least seven generations, with roots in Fixin tracing back to the late 18th century. Initially, production was primarily sold in bulk. A major turning point occurred after World War II when Guy Berthaut began bottling and marketing his wines. In 1974, his sons, Vincent and Denis Berthaut, both enologists, continued the expansion, notably by acquiring new vineyards in Fixin. The year 2013 marked a decisive milestone with the arrival of Amélie Berthaut, Denis's daughter, and Marie-Andrée Gerbet (from Domaine François Gerbet). An agricultural engineer and enologist, Amélie merged the Berthaut vineyards with a selection of parcels from the Gerbet estate, giving birth to Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet. This consolidation significantly enriched the portfolio of terroirs. In 2017, Nicolas Faure, her husband and an experienced vineyard manager, joined the estate, bringing expertise acquired from prestigious properties. Amélie's approach has instilled an "elegant modernity," producing wines that are "livelier and more vibrant" and more approachable when young, while still retaining their aging potential. Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet spans 18 hectares of vines, primarily in Fixin, its historical home. Its parcels cover prestigious appellations, reflecting Burgundy's rich geological diversity, including Fixin, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, Echezeaux, and more. The diversity of soils, ranging from clay-limestone to sandy loams, imparts distinct characteristics to each cuvée. The presence of numerous old vines is a crucial factor in the depth and complexity of the wines. Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet's practices are rooted in environmental respect and a non-interventionist approach. Viticulture is organically oriented, free from chemical herbicides, with mechanical soil cultivation. Harvests are manual, and fermentations take place in concrete or stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts. The use of whole clusters adds complexity and structure. Wines are aged in oak barrels (10 to 24 months), with a limited percentage of new wood to preserve the purity of the fruit.
