The producer

Domaine Bertin-Delatte

Geneviève Bertin and Nicolas Delatte settled in 2008 in the famous village of Rablay-sur-Layon to found Domaine Bertin-Delatte. Their approach is part of the movement led by local influential figures who have become icons of French viticulture: their close neighbor Richard Leroy, a master of dry Chenin on schist, and Mark Angeli, a pioneer of biodynamics in Anjou. The terroir of Rablay-sur-Layon is defined by schist soils. This bedrock has a decisive influence on the style of the wines, particularly the Chenin. It imparts a beautiful acidity to the grapes, which becomes the backbone of the estate's wines. This natural acidity, while being a sign of great terroir, also represents a technical challenge in terms of balance. The use of oak barrels is employed sparingly so as not to oak the wines. Starting from 1.5 hectares in 2008, the estate now comprises 4.5 hectares dedicated to Chenin, their signature grape variety. Other grape varieties have since been planted, but Chenin remains the heart of the project. Organic farming was an obvious choice from the beginning. In the cellar, the philosophy follows the same line with minimal intervention to let nature and the terroir express themselves. Vinification is thus carried out with indigenous yeasts, minimal sulfur, and without chaptalization. Long aging periods, up to two years including one year in barrels, allow the wines to "settle" and be ready upon release. Domaine Bertin-Delatte produces several Chenin cuvées. Their signature cuvée, "L’Echalier," comes from the eponymous lieu-dit (named vineyard site); after one year of aging in barrels, it is kept en masse in tanks for 3 to 6 months. L’Echalier is an energetic Chenin, often pure and taut. The "Vingt-Neuf" cuvée is the domain's great Chenin cuvée, sourced from an old 0.5-hectare plot, planted in 1929. The juices are aged for 6 months in 500-liter barrels then matured in tanks for another 6 months. The result is generally impressive, with a wine of great depth and beautiful intensity.
