Established in Riquewihr since 1639, the Hugel family continues a vision of Alsatian wine based on respect for the terroir and the rejection of artificial artifice (no new oak is used). This Alsatian merchant house relies on a vineyard area of approximately 30 hectares. When the Alsace Grands Crus were created in 1975, Jean Hugel opposed a delimitation that he considered too broad and permissive, fearing a dilution of quality. Out of protest and a commitment to high standards, the family long refused to include the "Grand Cru" designation on its labels, preferring to market its best wines under the name "Jubilée." However, the new generation has decided to clarify the range in order to showcase the exceptional terroirs of Schoenenbourg and Sporen. Thus, they have transitionally introduced the term "Grossi Laüe," which means "great terroirs" or "Grands Crus" in the Alsatian dialect. According to the Hugel family, this allows them to "call a spade a spade" while distinguishing themselves from the simple use of the term Grand Cru. Conceptually, the term Grossi Laüe is equivalent to the German Grosses Gewächs or Burgundian Grands Crus. It designates the elite of the production, coming from the historical heart of the estate's plots. This transition prepares for the official return of the Grand Cru designation on subsequent vintages (from 2015/2022). The "Estate" range has been redefined. It brings together wines exclusively from plots belonging to the family, located on first-rate terroirs (often the same as the Grossi Laüe but from younger vines or peripheral plots). The range offers a good introduction to the Hugel "signature" with greater complexity than the "Classic" range from the merchant business.
Pinot Gris Estate : offered with several years of bottle aging, this wine comes from the best clay terroirs of Riquewihr, which give it freshness. It ferments partially in Burgundian barrels without showing any woody taste. It is an opulent Pinot Gris made for gastronomy that can be kept for another ten years.
Pinot Gris Grossi Laüe : always offered with some bottle aging, this cuvée comes notably from the Pflostig limestone terroir. It regularly reveals notes of smoke, brioche, and yellow fruits, with a silky structure characteristic of grapes harvested at full maturity.
Riesling Estate : the archetype of dry, floral, and precise Riesling, ideal for seafood pairings.
Riesling Grossi Laüe : this wine comes exclusively from the Schoenenbourg Grand Cru (marl and gypsum). It is a model of a wine for aging. Its saline minerality and evolving notes of white truffle and petrol make it a very flavorful "intellectual" wine.
Gewurztraminer Vendanges Tardives : the estate has made a specialty of this type of sweet wine. This cuvée comes from the Sporen Grand Cru. It is a "meditation wine" with aromas of exotic fruits and great aging potential.
Gewurztraminer SGN Sélection de Grains Nobles: this category of dessert wines was born in Alsace in 1984 under the influence of Jean Hugel. The cuvée, from very limited yields (less than 10 hl/ha), contains, depending on the vintage, between 140 and 150 g/l of residual sugar balanced by superb acidity. Exotic and spicy (saffron, ginger), the length on the palate of this wine exceeds one minute.
