The producer

Clos des Papes

The Avril family has been established in Châteauneuf-du-Pape since the 17th century. During the Ancien Régime, its members held offices as consuls and municipal treasurers. Since the early 20th century, Clos des Papes has distinguished itself from other growths by its varietal mix, which includes a significant proportion of Mourvèdre. Paul-Eugène Avril was, in fact, one of the architects of the 1936 decree establishing the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC and its thirteen permitted grape varieties. Since 2010, under the direction of Paul-Vincent Avril, the estate has undergone several adjustments and is now certified organic. To counter the rising alcohol levels in Grenache, the proportion of Mourvèdre has been significantly increased to approximately 35% of the blend. This late-ripening variety provides structure and, above all, a natural acidity essential for the balance of sun-drenched vintages. The red grape composition consists primarily of Grenache Noir (50%), supplemented by 10% Syrah, 2.5% Cinsault, and 2.5% Counoise. The white varieties include Roussanne (20% of the white vineyard), Picpoul Blanc (16%), Picardan (16%), Bourboulenc (16%), Grenache Blanc (16%), and Clairette (16%). Leaf thinning is now practiced sparingly, or even abandoned on sides exposed to the setting sun, to preserve shade for the clusters and avoid sunburn or over-ripening. Production is intentionally limited to very low yields—often below 25 hl/ha—ensuring optimal phenolic concentration. Trained in Burgundy, Paul-Vincent Avril advocates a non-interventionist approach. His philosophy is rooted in fundamental principles : The refusal of "prestige" or single-plot cuvées. This ensures the main wine is not stripped of its structure by a supposedly "superior" bottling. All 24 plots are blended as early as the fermentation phase to produce only one red wine and one white wine (which accounts for 10% of production). In the cellar, the estate practices 100% destemming without seeking heavy extraction. The resulting wines offer an elegant texture supported by silky tannins. Aging takes place exclusively in old foudres (large oak casks), avoiding the use of new wood which might mask the purity of the terroir. Paul Avril has received the 2026 Winemaker of the Year Award from La Revue du Vin de France. This well-deserved distinction recognizes the high standards he has consistently upheld since joining Clos des Papes.
