"Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Léoville Poyferré has one of the most harmonious and complete bouquets from Saint Julien: very well-defined blackberry, briary and chalky scents, real focus and delivery here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, ripe tannin matched with well-judged acidity. Like the 2006 Léoville-Barton, it is stubborn and backward, but there is clearly harmony and focus on the finish, the new oak deftly assimilated in the fabric of the wine. Château Léoville Poyferré
Château Léoville Poyferré, a Second Growth Classified Grand Cru of Bordeaux in 1855, is an emblematic property of the Saint-Julien appellation.
The history of Château Léoville Poyferré stems from the division of the vast Léoville estate in 1840, giving rise to three entities classified as Second Growths in 1855: Léoville-Poyferré, Léoville-Las Cases, and Léoville-Barton. Since 1920, the Cuvelier family has owned the Château, marking an era of modernization under the impetus of Didier Cuvelier starting in 1979. He introduced renowned oenologists such as Émile Peynaud and Michel Rolland, modernized the facilities, and expanded the vineyard from 48 to 80 hectares.
Located on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, between Margaux and Pauillac, Saint-Julien benefits from a temperate maritime climate. Léoville Poyferré's 80-hectare vineyard primarily rests on Mindel gravel terraces with a clay-sandy subsoil. These gravels are crucial for Cabernet Sauvignon, the dominant grape variety, as they retain heat and ensure excellent drainage, promoting optimal berry ripeness. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot complete the grape varieties planted.
The Château practices sustainable viticulture, certified HVE 3 since 2017. Harvests are manual, with a rigorous double sorting, first manual then optical, to select only the healthiest berries. Vinification is carried out parcel by parcel in 57 thermo-regulated stainless steel tanks. Cold pre-fermentation macerations are performed to gently extract color and aromas. Aging lasts 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels, with a high proportion of new wood, contributing to the wine's structure and complexity.
The Grand Vin of Château Léoville Poyferré is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, offering intense notes of black fruits (cassis, blackberry), tobacco, graphite, and spices, with hints of vanilla and chocolate. Powerful and opulent on the palate, it presents silky tannins and remarkable aging potential for several decades.
The estate also produces a second wine, Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré, which is more accessible and fruit-driven, made from younger vines.
