The producer

Château Yvonne

The history of the estate began in 1997 when Yvonne and Jean-François Lamunière acquired a 16th-century manor house and several abandoned vineyards. With the invaluable support of Françoise Foucault (associated with the legendary Clos Rougeard), they restored the vineyard and quickly elevated their Chenin Blancs to the top tier of the region. In 2007, Mathieu Vallée, a trained engineer and the son of a winemaker, took over the helm. He retained the original name and brought new momentum to the estate by acquiring 5 hectares in Champigny, successfully balancing production between white and red wines. The estate covers 16 hectares (10 ha of Cabernet Franc, 5 ha of Chenin, and 0.5 ha of Pineau d’Aunis) spread across the villages of Parnay, Champigny, Turquant, and Montsoreau. The geological signature of the estate is tuffeau (Turonian limestone), a porous rock that naturally regulates the water supply to the vines. There are three distinct soil profiles: Clay-limestone plateaus : The terroir for age-worthy cuvées such as Château Yvonne (White and Red). Senonian (Sands): Located south of Parnay, these soils produce suppler wines like L'Île Quatre Sous. Ludian (Lacustrine limestone): Found on the Champigny plateau, bringing freshness and tension to the La Folie cuvée. Certified organic since 1997 and biodynamic since 2011/2012, the estate practices minimal intervention. In the vineyard, Mathieu Vallée employs Guyot Poussard pruning, a method more respectful of sap flow, to preserve the longevity of the vines. An agroforestry project titled Les Arbres (The Trees) has also been established, interplanting vines with pear trees. Vinification takes place in troglodyte galleries carved directly into the tuffeau stone, which provides ideal thermal stability. Following a rigorous manual sorting process, fermentations are carried out using indigenous yeasts, and the wines remain unfiltered. The wines are aged for one to two years, with only 20% in new oak barrels. The remainder matures in large foudres, concrete tanks (to preserve fruit vibrance), and more recently, sandstone amphorae to impart greater "purity" to the white wines. The Wine Range Château Yvonne (White and Red): The pillars of the estate, benchmarks for density and cellaring potential. Le Beaumeray: Crafted from massal selections from Clos Rougeard, this represents the pinnacle of the red range for its fullness and distinction. Le Gory : A rare, single-plot Chenin (vines planted in 1999) of remarkable power. L'Île Quatre Sous : A "vin de soif" style Saumur-Champigny, aged in concrete vats to highlight its crunchy fruit. Château Yvonne remains a reference point among the great wines of the Loire Valley, consistently praised for its refinement and exceptional ability to age.
