Domaine Benoît Mérias

Domain presentation

Domaine Benoît Mérias

Benoît Mérias took over in 2011 Laurent Chatenay's Estate, located at the heart of the Montlouis Sur Loire Appellation. The certification in organic viticulture in 2003 and a collaboration with Jacky blot (from Domaine de la Taille au Loup) motivated Benoît to jump into the wirlwind of the vines. On the left bank of the river, the gravel soil, an oceanic climate and the exposition of the vines facing south often make Montlouis an Appellation often more exuberant than its neighbour Vouvray. The vines are often saved by their structural acidity, which brings to the taster complete artworks, with wonderful balance. The Maisonnettes cuvée clearly demonstrates what the Chenin Blanc (or Pineau de la Loire) has to offer when it is handled with care. The wine is made from old vines, (up to 80 years old), that have undergone no chemical treatment, nor any labouring of the soils. The grapes are sorted with great care after the harvest, and pressed in full clusters. After this, a clarification by gravity ensues, and a natural fermentation with indigenious yiests only. The wine will then age for more than a year, in used burgundian oak barrels. The result of all this? A greedy wine, that opens with warm notes (bourbon vanilla and dried mango). The palate is sapid, tense and pure, with a devilish length. A sip calls for another, and despite its great ageing potential, it will be hard to wait for it any longer. Please enjoy!
